Recent progress on the development of MgB2 wires and applications in Hitachi
*Hideki Tanaka1

MgB2 wires and magnets have great potentials for helium free superconducting equipments. Representative advantages of MgB2 magnets are the higher stability and the availability of fast ramping. We demonstrated these advantages by fabricating and testing a prototype magnet for klystron and a magnet for MRI use. Actually, MgB2 coils inserted in these magnets were made by the Wind&React method. For spreading MgB2 equipment futhermore, fabricating cost of MgB2 magnets should be reduced and MgB2 coils are to be made by the React&Wind method.

In this paper, I will introduce test results of two demonstrated magnets made by the Wind&React method, and then talk about how to bend the sintered MgB2 wires without Ic degradation for the React&Wind method. Generally, MgB2 wires at room temperature have the bending tolerance and irreversible strain limit, which is equal to the thermal-pre-compressive strain of MgB2 filaments. One of our approaches for improving bending tolerances of MgB2 wires is using metal pipes, which have higher coefficient of thermal expansion. In this presentation, the results of improving bending tolerances of the MgB2 wires with using SUS pipe as a reinforcing material of MgB2 wires will be presented.
