We will review the development and present status of the 2G HTS wire technology and production at the SuperOx group of companies.
In ten years of existence of its wire-making business SuperOx has evolved from a newcomer to the industry leader. We supply the wire to SuperOx’ own HTS device projects and to customers all over the world.
Two recent examples of successful HTS device projects completed by SuperOx with own 2G HTS wire include: (1) a 220 kV FCL, since 2019 in routine operation at a substation in Moscow and (2) a 500 kW prototype motor for aircraft, which had the first test flight earlier this year.
We offer two products: wire for LN2 based on GdBCO and wire for in-field use based on YBCO. The performance of wire for LN2 is on par with the best products from other manufacturers, while SuperOx wire for in-field use is the market-leading wire thanks to the combination of its very high performance at low temperature in magnetic field and commercial availability.
In response to the explosive demand growth driven by high magnetic field compact fusion, SuperOx has expanded its 2G HTS wire capacity to 1000 km of 12 mm wide wire per year. Provided this new production volume is sustained, the wire cost is projected to decrease to the level at which many HTS applications become commercially viable.
